My Story
My name is Herbert Shane Hartman. I'm a member of the Lhts'umusuyoo or Beaver Clan from the Nak'azdli First Nation. I grew up in the small Northern town of Fraser Lake, BC. I'm a self taught artist specializing in "Aboriginal Inspired Paintings" and Isla's New Drum is my first children's book. I created Isla's New Drum to read to my daughter Isla as well as a method to bring some of my Carrier Dakelh culture into the world and to that end, I'm very excited and proud to share some of my culture with you.
A heartfelt thanks to Terri at Strong Nations Publishing for taking a chance on my book and offering to publish it. This has been one of the coolest experiences of my life. Thanks once again Terri.
The Carrier Dakelh words found in the book were referenced from the Central Carrier Bilingual Dictionary and are the some of the same words I heard as a youth growing up in Northern BC.
I hope you enjoy Isla's New Drum and Mussi Cho for your time.
Cheers,
Herbert Shane Hartman.
